The Spanish word for Tattoo is Tatuaje, the company owned by Pete Johnson. Back in early 2011, a box pressed Lancero of Tattoo was released on the market to establish the name even further when Cuban Crafters in Miami, filed a copyright to use the name Tattoo. Pete Johnson argued it was too close to Tatuaje and won in a case documented over at Cigar Law a site operated by our really good friend Frank Herrera.
3 Years later the Tattoo is back in a Robusto format for now with 3 more sizes due at IPCPR, (Toro, Toro Grande and Torpedo).
Speaking of Tattoo’s I am contemplating getting our site logo inked before the IPCPR trade show in Vegas next month.
Cigar: Tatuaje Tattoo
Size: Robusto (5 x 50)
Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Strength: Medium – Full
Number Smoked: 2
Appearance & Construction: The Tatuaje Robusto also known as Cabellero features a silky Habano wrapper from Ecuador and is made Tabacalera Cubana (TACUBA) in Esteli, Nicaragua a factory owned by the Garcia family. The wrapper has a very slight brindle appearance with a a flat cap that is very Cubanesque. The band of the cigar is red and gold, with the word Tattoo over the black Pete Johnson logo that always reminds me of the artist formally known as Prince.
Flavor & Notes: The nose of the foot of the cigar serves up very earthy notes of hay while the cold draw of the Tatuaje Tattoo serves up coffee and more of the earthy notes experienced to the nose.
The first third starts off with that classic spice associated with most cigars to come out of a Garcia owned factory before giving way to a nice rich mocha with some nice floral notes on the retrohale.
The second third of the cigar picks up notes of licorice to compliment a nice base earthy note and the spice of the cigar especially through the nose which lost the floral like quality.
The last third of the cigar becomes full bodied with some faint mocha notes over earth and pepper.
Smoking Characteristics: The draw of the Tatuaje Tattoo is perfection, with a nice fluid draw and ample smoke production The light to medium gray ash holds on for a third at a time with little effort. The burn while not perfect is razor sharp with a thin carbon line. It smokes like a champ and comes off as more expensive than it is.
Conclusion: This is a cigar that is worthy of being in a regular rotation for multiple reasons. First, the price. With a MSRP of $5.00 the cigar easily smokes like something that I would pay $8.00 – $9.00. Second, the cigar has a nice flavor profile with a short finish, which is something I look for in a cigar.
MSRP: $5.00
Score: 91
